North Plainfield has had the highest tax rate in Somerset County for more than 5 years. This Team North Plainfield will sift through all of the financials and take a hard look at where the taxpayer’s money is going to ensure it is not being wasted and to make changes where necessary to try and get that number down.
North Plainfield was settled before the American Revolution. It has a rich history, beautiful buildings, the Washington Park Historic District, Vermeule Mansion, a downtown area and much more. We have seen a deterioration of our history with buildings being torn down, laws changed that no longer protect our homes, removal of the street markers and a general attitude that is anti-preservation. The history of our great town needs to be preserved for future generations and this Team North Plainfield will ensure that happens with preservation laws, education, planning and by seeking grants for restoration.
Crime in North Plainfield is a cause of distress for all of its residents. Trespassing, drug use, cars being broken into and homes burglarized are just a few of the complaints from residents North Plainfield has abandoned the “Broken Window Theory” which links incivility, visible signs of disorder and anti-social behavior to crimes. For example abandoned buildings, graffiti, loitering, fist fights, parking on lawns, etc. will lead to bigger problems and criminal behavior. This Theory will be the cornerstone for Law and Order under our Administration. Also, the Bail Reform changes have made it difficult, if not impossible, for the police to get crime under control. This Administration will be a very active voice for you with the County and State representatives in this and other areas.
North Plainfield is a small community whose residents enjoy having a lot of activities. We have recreation programs for kids and adults, summer concerts, parades and more. This Team will work to continue this tradition and create even more programs for the benefit of our residents.
We will work to ensure that there will not be a repeat of the fire on Grove Street where one person died and it turned out that illegal housing and no code enforcement was involved. This Team knows that the value of our homes is extremely important. We will strive to improve the values by enforcement of building and property maintenance codes and establishing a program to help prevent foreclosures.
There has been a trend in this country, and in North Plainfield, to return to the land and off the grid type living. In a post-COVID-19 environment we see the need for people to be reasonably self-sufficient. Our Team will work to educate the residents on Victory Gardens for personal use. We want to get the youth involved once again in the 4-H and this will be one way to accomplish that as well.
This Team wants our seniors, and those with disabilities, to have the same quality of life as everyone else. It will be our mission to reach out to these members of the community to see what we can do to make life better for them and to make sure that there are mechanisms in place to ensure their safety in times of emergency like what is happening now with COVID-19.
